Mount Washington stands at 6,288 feet, making it the highest peak in the northeastern United States and one of the most visited mountains in the world. Known for extreme weather conditions - including the former world-record wind speed of 231 mph - the mountain offers multiple ways to reach the summit, from driving to riding the historic Cog Railway to hiking some of the most challenging trails in the East.
Mount Washington Auto Road
The Mount Washington Auto Road is a privately operated 7.6-mile toll road that climbs from the base at Pinkham Notch to the summit. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes each way and offers increasingly dramatic views as you ascend above treeline. At the summit, the Sherman Adams Visitor Center provides exhibits on the mountain's weather, geology, and history. The Auto Road is open seasonally, typically from late May through October, weather permitting.
The Cog Railway
The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, has been carrying passengers to the summit since 1869. The 3-hour round trip includes approximately 30 minutes at the summit. The railway departs from Marshfield Station on the western side of the mountain, about 40 minutes from Riverside. Reservations are strongly recommended during peak season and fall foliage weekends.
Hiking the Presidential Range
For experienced hikers, the Presidential Range offers some of the most rewarding and challenging hiking in the eastern United States. The Tuckerman Ravine Trail is the most popular route to the summit of Mount Washington, at approximately 8.4 miles round trip with 4,250 feet of elevation gain. Above-treeline conditions can be severe even in summer - proper gear, preparation, and awareness of weather conditions are essential.
